Enjoy this peaceful return to La Chapelle-en-Valjouffrey, with a route along the valley floor, through hamlets and meadows, along the Bonne river.
After passing through the mineral and glacial world of the Font Turbat valley, this stage marks a return to verdant nature. It's also a return to a rural civilization that lives in harmony with its environment through tourism, forestry and agro-pastoral activities.

Description

From the fountain in the heart of the hamlet, head towards the Font Turbat refuge. At the next crossroads, still in the hamlet, turn right towards Col de la Vaurze. Cross the bridge over the Bonne and turn right towards Les Faures.
  1. The path crosses meadows interspersed with forest copses and low walls and becomes a footpath. It rises slightly through woods and scree.
  2. At the “Bois Noir - 1100 m” crossroads, cross the footbridge and continue towards Les Faures. The path descends gently, sometimes closely skirting the Bonne River on the left bank.
  3. At the “Les Fauchiers - 1070 m” crossroads, turn right. Once on the RD117, follow the road to the right to cross the bridge, then take the path on the left towards “la Chalp par canal de la Douy”. Then reach the crossroads “Le Pinet - 1150m”. Follow the path (old Douy irrigation canal) to La Chalp (narrow passages, a few short steep ascents and descents, a short stony ford).
  4. At La Chalp, take the first left onto the RD117. Follow this to the right as far as the Ségouins bridge (500 m). Stay on the road, passing the sawmill, then take a small path along the road to the bend.
  5. Descend on the path beneath the Bariou rock. Take the footbridge over La Bonne River. Follow the signs up to an old road. This road goes off to the right as far as the “Les Chatelards” crossroads.
  6. Take the track on the right towards “Pont des Praz”, cross it and continue to La Chapelle-en-Valjouffrey.

    History

    The Désert-en-Valjouffrey

No sand or barren lands, the name of Desert comes from the word "essarter" which means to clear the land of forest in order to produce a clearing. Forest clearing was necessary for the implementation and the development of agriculture in the mountains... Nowadays, the Desert is one of the only hamlets at altitude which is inhabited all year round in spite of the harsh mountain climate.
